I’m going to show you how I turned a discarded plastic bird feeder top and an affordable planter from the Dollarama dollar store into a chic and modern plant stand. Join me as we transform these items with a simple coat of paint.

Let's dive into this step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve a DIY planter pot.

Tools and materials

  • Plastic bird feeder top
  • Plastic planter pot (from a dollar store)
  • Matte black paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Sandpaper (medium grit)
  • Construction adhesive/glue (such as No More Nails or Liquid Nails)
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Drop cloth or newspaper

1. Clean and prepare the bird feeder and pot

Begin by cleaning both the plastic bird feeder top and the planter pot. Use a cleaning cloth to remove any dirt or debris.

Lightly sand the surfaces with medium-grit sandpaper. This will help the paint adhere better and create a smoother finish.

2. Apply the paint

Lay down a drop cloth or newspaper to protect your work surface. Using a paintbrush, apply a fresh coat of matte black paint to both the plastic bird feeder top and the planter pot. Make sure to cover the surfaces evenly for a smooth and professional finish.

Allow the first coat of paint to dry according to the paint manufacturer's instructions. If necessary, apply a second coat for full coverage. Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

3. Glue to assemble

Once the paint is fully dry, it's time to assemble your new plant stand. Put glue on the bottom of the bird feeder. Place the plastic planter pot upside down on a flat surface.

Carefully position the painted plastic bird feeder top on the base of the planter pot. Put a heavy object in the bird feeder to weigh it down so the glue can make firm contact with the planter pot. Let the glue set.
