You can Google orange peel texture and look at the images
This is also called "knock down". You spray on a drywall compound, let it sit for a specified amount of time and then knock it down with a flat trowel. It can be a DIY project but I prefer to call in the professionals on this one! it does hide any ceiling imperfections and paints easily. You would need to prime it first then use ceiling paint.
Here you go.
I did this in the house I now live in. At the time it was my mother's and when she purchased it the couple she bought it from had remodeled it and sprayed popcorn on the ceilings. I pushed and pushed until my mother let me scrape the ceilings and then wallpapered the ceilings with anaglypta paper *known in the US as paintable textured paper. Although the ceilings were fine after scraping them I love the look of the paper as it resembles the tin ceilings and is simple tinstallat at a fraction of the cost.
I know you can find spray cans of orange peal at Menards and most box/hardware stores. Good idea to practice first, and then let it thoroughly dry before you paint.
