Christmas is all about lights and I love finding ways to put those dreamy, warm, fairy lights in every corner of my house. Of course, I love to incorporate them into my DIY crafts too. So here I made a pretty bottle lamp to adorn my living room and shine bright.

Tools and materials:

  • Square glass bottle
  • Christmas paper napkins
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint
  • Air-dry clay
  • Egg carton
  • String lights
How to turn a square bottle into a Christmas lantern

I turned a square bottle into a lantern that is made to look like a hut with windows. And you can see a decorated Christmas tree inside.

Choosing a Christmas paper napkin design

1. Choose a decoupage design

Take a clean glass bottle. Choose a decoupage paper or any printed Christmas design.

Adding a decoupage design

2. Apply Mod Podge to the bottle

Apply Mod Podge on the bottle and stick the paper with the design facing down. Note we are only working on two sides of this rectangular bottle.

How the lantern looks from the outside

Let it dry completely and this is how it looks inside.

Applying white paint

3. Apply white paint

Apply white paint on the decoupaged area. This will make the design inside more prominent and clear.

Adding a decoupage design on the back

4. Decoupage on the back

Choose another decoupage paper design and glue it on top of the paint. Again, we are doing this only on the same two sides of the bottle. Once it dries, apply a generous coat of Mod Podge again and dry.

Rolling out clay for the windows

5. Make a window design in clay

Using air-dry clay, create a window pattern on the other two sides of the bottle.

Making patterns in the clay

Using household items, such as a pen cap, or a toothpick, you can create designs on the clay border. You can be as creative as you want here.

Egg carton

8. Make the roof

Take an egg carton and tear small rectangular pieces out of it.

Making the roof for the lantern

Paper mache the egg carton pieces on the neck of the bottle to form a hut-shape

Painting the Christmas lamp

10. Paint

Paint the bottom empty spaces in white and green leaves to blend with the rest of the design. Also, paint the top part with brown to give it a strawed/bricked effect.

Painted window borders

Paint the window borders in black and highlight the designs with gold.

Adding string lights to the Christmas lantern

11. Add lights

Add a string light to the bottle and your Christmas lamp is ready.
