Want to turn trash (cans) into treasure? In this tutorial, I'll show you how to transform a wire trash can from the Dollar Store into stunning fall decor. The result is a beautiful and budget-friendly fall centerpiece you'll be proud to display on your Thanksgiving tablescape.

This post was transcribed by a member of the Hometalk editorial team from the original HometalkTV episode.

Tools and materials:

  • Wire trash can
  • Floral foam
  • Chicken wire
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Faux flowers
  • Skewers
  • Floral tape
  • Bittersweet vine
Placing the floral foam on the trash can

1. Attach the floral foam to the trash can

We have our waste basket upside down, and I have a piece of dry floral foam. If you prefer to use styrofoam, you can, but it will be much harder to get your stems into it.

Laying chicken wire over the top

You want to take a small piece of chicken wire and lay it over the top of the foam. This will keep the pipe cleaners from cutting through the foam.

Adding pipe cleaners

Next, slip a couple of pipe cleaners through the bottom of the trash can.

Tying the floral foam in place

Tie them around the floral foam to keep it in place. Make sure the chicken wire is over the top of the foam.

Building out the fall arrangement

2. Build the fall arrangement

Now we get to design. We are going to just go around and build our fall arrangement. I have a couple of longer pieces here, and I want this to hang down over again. You can see that those will pull right or push right into our floral foam.

Skewering little pumpkins

If you've got some of these little pumpkins like this and you want to add them, all you need to do is take a skewer and you just push the skewer right into your pumpkin. Then you can clip that off and put it right where you want.

Adding leaves around the edges

Keep adding autumn leaves all the way around the edge because we want to cover the floral foam completely.

Making stems out of skewers

Tip: You can also take the skewers and use them to create stems for the leaves. If the stem is really soft or too short, you can just add a skewer and wrap it with floral tape.

Adding fall flowers

Now fill in the arrangement with lots of fall blooms. These are a couple of the picks that I bought on sale at the end of the season last year. Make sure you take advantage of those.

Mixing Dollar Tree and silk flowers

If you wanted to keep this all a Dollar Tree project, you could pick up all of your flowers and foliage right at Dollar Tree. What I would suggest is that you pick up a few nicer quality silk flowers from elsewhere and put in all of your Dollar Tree flowers first and then add your nicer things on the top to cover it up.

Wrapping a bittersweet vine around the basket

I have this bittersweet vine that I want to add also. It is on a wire so I will wrap it loosely around the base of the basket and then circle up towards the top.

Wrapping the vine and securing it in place

When I get up here to the top, I'm going to do the same thing and wrap the end around a basket wire. You can see how that just adds a little bit more decoration to it.

Here is our arrangement on a Dollar store waste paper basket. It looks so pretty and adds a lovely touch of fall. I hope you like this and are inspired and going to head out to Dollar Tree and pick up a waste paper basket.

How cute is that? I almost couldn't get past those glass bottles. LOVE them.

Did you paint the bottles or are they really sea glass?
