Festive Red Beanie Christmas Tree Ornament

With the winter weather cooling down, it is time to cozy on up with this fun and festive holiday craft! These miniature Christmas beanies are a quick and easy activity to enjoy with your entire family as you play your favorite holiday music and sip on some hot cocoa. There are multiple ways you can enjoy this craft, whether that be hung up as a Christmas ornament, or incorporated into a garland to decorate your fireplace mantle, to even being added on top of a pom pom ball to create a Santa Gnome or Snowman decoration. The knotty possibilities are endless!


Finished Dimensions:

  • Length: 2”; Width: 1”

Supplies:

  • Red acrylic yarn: 17 x 10”
  • Baker’s twine: 1 x 10” red and white 2mm
  • Toilet paper roll x 1
  • Polyester fiber fill or cotton ball
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue stick

To create the circular base of the beanie, begin by cutting off 1” of the toilet paper roll. (A-C) 

cut the newly removed piece in half (D)

apply a small amount of hot glue to one end and secure it to the opposite end. (E)

One at a time, attach 16 pieces of red acrylic yarn to the toilet paper roll by tying lark’s head knots. (F-H)

Push all the ends of the yarn through the toilet paper roll. (I)

Using the final strand of yarn, tie a double knot approximately 1” above the base of the beanie to secure all the strands together. (J-K)

Use a small amount of polyester fiber fill or a cotton ball to stuff the inside of the beanie. (L-M)

Trim the top of the beanie with scissors. (N)

With the baker’s twine, use the yarn needle to pull the twine midway through the top of the beanie just below the double knot created in step 4. (O-P)

Approximately 1.5’ from the top of the ornament, tie an overhand knot to secure the twine and trim the excess. (Q)

    Where I grew up, these hats were called tuques.

    The rimless cap (below) was a beanie.
