Help with 80's bathroom in a new home!

Janet Pizaro on Sep 04, 2016With the risk of the tile breaking when removing the vanity I would consider painting the vanity with Rustoleums vanity and countertop makeover kits. Change the faucet and add hardware to the vanity.I would also change out the mirror for a more contempary appearance.Helpful Reply

Sandy on Sep 04, 2016Thanks Janet! We were thinking painting would probably be best too but didn't know what to use. We will check out these kits though.Helpful Reply

Mary on Sep 04, 2016I agree with Janet, painting is the safest bet. It's amazing what a new faucet and hardware will add. Be aware that the mirror is probably glued and you'll have to re-do the wall if you remove it, but that was my first thought...downsize the mirror and put either a cabinet, floating shelves or something pretty above the toilet area. Good luck! We are looking at different homes, too and in our price range we will likely have to redo bathrooms, so I would love to see the final result!Helpful Reply

Ann on Sep 04, 2016After you've painted your vanity you can add a real kick of pretty detail by adding glass tile below and above the existing mirror. The spaces are small but the shine and even color of glass tiles would really give this small room some pretty detail. And since the space is small the budget would be small too.Helpful Reply

Jackie Byrd on Sep 04, 2016The Rustoleum cabinet paint is the easiest and cheapest option. Get some modern handles. Keep the mirror, just frame it. There is a great solution to a huge mirror like this on the forum where they put a narrow cabinet in the middle so it looked like 2 mirrors. What about the tub/shower, is that pink tile? Develop a plan for the entire room before starting the changes.Helpful Reply

Marie Alesi Caruana on Sep 04, 2016I agree with Jackie--used Rustoleum paint but DO NOT REMOVE the mirror. Just frame it and put that cabinet in the middle or just frame it.Helpful Reply

Cindy Hagemann on Sep 04, 2016We had a similar vanity but smaller and just put wood over the top of the vanity. I agree with painting the cabinet, adding knobs, framing the existing mirror (we did it in this bath too).Helpful Reply

Sage on Sep 05, 2016The frameless mirror is fine, if you want to upgrade the cabinets go to myoverlays.com before picking the paint. I think that you might keep the pink formica and spend money on lighting.Helpful Reply

Debi53 on Sep 06, 2016Everyone has given you great advice. I will add this: check into a tub & tile resurfacing company in your area. They can add a bullnose edge to your countertop and use a spray that looks like stone. You can choose any color and texture. We had this done to our sink countertop and our tub tile surround about 5 years ago and they still look like new. It is a few hundred dollars, but completely changes the look with out the mess of removing the top. It is also prettier (I think) than laminate. Another option is Granite Transformations or a similar company. They will put a new countertop over the old, but you do have to remove the sink for this. I had this done in a different house (in a kitchen) and it was gorgeous. Also, this granite overlay does not have to be sealed like regular granite. It is nonporous and doesn't stain. It is just more expensive.Helpful Reply

Baroness RH on Sep 08, 2016I'm a professional decorator. I use rustoleum cabinet transformation from the Home Depot. It comes in 2 sizes, and variety of color choices. You will need the smaller size for this project. Approimately $75 for the small kit. You will have product left over. Purchase moulding to ''frame'' your mirror. Be sure to 'miter' the ends. Use the remaining kit product on the frame moulding before you frame the mirror. I just use 'Gorilla glue' [spsringly] to attach. Good luck from the Robin's Nest Emporium! Deanna Nassar on Sep 11, 2016Take off doors before you paint them. Get some hinges and knobs that will match up with a new faucet set. You have the option of painting trim something that will coordinate with the colors you choose for cabinet or paint trim same color. If you do wall a different color do it first so any drops will be covered when you do the top of cabinet.Helpful Reply
