Plywood Plank Floors

In the spring I participated in a challenge called the One Room Challenge where we had six weeks to fully transform a room in our home. I knew right away it would be the living room that I took on, as the floor was in real rough shape and the space was feeling a bit tired. The living room opens up into the dining room to make one long space. However they each had different wood floors and therefore not level.
We knew that brand new hardwood with a rustic feel would be a large financial undertaking so I was searching for a different solution. I did not want laminate, but rather real wood. I had seen plywood floors around the web, but I didn't want just big sheets of plywood. Instead, we decided to cut the 4 x 8 sheets into 6 inch wide planks.

We nailed them in with an air nail gun, again keeping with the rustic time worn look.
We used good one side spruce plywood and after cutting into 6 inch width, we cut some of the planks into 2 and 4 foot lengths, and left the rest 8 feet. We laid them randomly so no seams would meet side by side.

We then had the painstaking job of choosing a stain color! After one coat of stain we were happy with the color and finished it with 5 coats of polyurethane.
Total cost was under $500 for 275 square feet of real wood flooring!

Here is a look at the room before.
