DIY Cat Door

When we moved in to our house, we decided to put the litter box for our cat in the basement. We have a bathroom down there and that seemed to be the best place for it. It annoyed me though to leave the door open to the basement all the time. Not only was it drafty, but it didn't look the best from the front door. So, I started looking for pet doors. I couldn't find anything that I liked the look of or cost of, so I had a crazy idea just to frame a hole out with picture frames. Sure enough, it worked great.
Here's what I did:
1. Took the door down.
2. Measured a square in the bottom middle of the door. Used a jigsaw to cut the square out.
2. Sanded the edges and then nailed the picture frames to the door (one on each side).
We've had the kitty door in for over a year and it still looks great. It was a super simple project and it's something so useful. We love it.

What is in the center? I have a "doggy" door that my cats LOVE that had been installed in the wall to the porch outside. There is vinyl in the center flap. I have been trying to make it warmer for winter, but haven' t figured it out?? Also, I want to make a litter box cabinet with a door like this in my bath/laundry room so that everything is inside but it looks like a built in.. Thanks, Neighbor.
    • @Jennifer Ewing Nothing is in the center. It's an interior door, so we didn't worry about it. The same concept would totally work with the bathroom laundry cabinet or you could add vinyl if you wanted something to hang in the middle. Our's led into the basement, so we just left it as-is.
