Homemade Roach Spray (Good for Ants and Other Bugs Too)
Do you know what the number one question was we were asked this summer? How to get rid of roaches! One of our popular posts is our homemade ant spray, so readers want to know about other insects too. Especially roaches!
I just used a bunch of this homemade spray because a random trail of ants showed up on my front porch, and I didn’t want Amelia to get in it. I spray it to safely kill the ants and and things like roaches. It was safe for her, safe for the dog, and killed the ants.
Hometalk Recommends!
Before we share the recipe, please head to our blog post. We have very important tips on keeping your home clean and free from bugs. This is always the first step when dealing with something like roaches or ants. They travel to find water and shelter.
We explain more important tips in our blog post, so Please read this first!!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of vinegar, distilled
- 2 cups of water
- 3 tablespoon dishwashing liquid
- 3 tablespoons table salt
- Spray Bottle
Directions:
- Mix ingredients together, add to a spray bottle.
- Shake well before spraying each time.
To INTENSIFY this solution:
If you have larger roaches to deal with, eliminate the water in the solution above and replace with additional vinegar. This means the solution will contain 4 cups of vinegar, 3 tbsp dawn, 3 tbsp salt. I have used it on small roaches and it kills them instantly.

I have been putting whole cloves and bay leaves on every shelf of my cupboards to keep away insects and especially, Boll weevils . It works. My next issue is keeping the cats off my car. I’m tired of looking at all their paw prints those 20 feral cats out there making me crazy.
please don’t respond about litter control. The county I live in doesn’t care nor do the people that live around me enough to stop feeding them or at least trap them and get them fixed

I have been told cats hate citrus peels, especially orange peel. My friend had a problem with feral cats on her lawn furniture & put bowls of orange peels on them & the cats stayed away. Don’t know if it would work for a car?

That must be a thing to do now. Our town captures the cat, has them fixed notches their ears and releases them back into the neighborhood. That doesn’t completely stop the over population but does slow it down.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I found cleaning vinegar. It’s 10% acetic acid as opposed to regular vinegar which is 5%. Got at the grocery store.
Will this work on bedbugs too?
How do you prevent the salt from clogging the sprayer? It gets stuck in the head of sprayer, thus clogging it.
